It’s got a great mix of old-school charm and interesting gameplay ideas, but the gameplay can be overly demanding of the player without letting them know what to do, and once they figure it out the game is extremely short. Tl dr – Steel Assault is an Action-Platformer that has players fighting through enemies and climbing between platforms using a zipline-style grappling hook.

However, everyone else may find this game too tough or too short to be worth its $15 asking price. However, despite its frustrations and short length, Steel Assault is still a solid tough-as-nails Action-Platformer, and players who don’t mind old-school challenge will find its creative gameplay and clever bosses make this a wonderful nostalgia trip.

Even if you know what you’re doing, the game can be punishingly difficult, and I can’t help but think that this is in part to cover for the game’s extremely short length - once you figure out how to stop constantly dying, it can be beaten in a matter of an hour or two. Numerous bosses seemed like a punishing repetition of taking hit after seemingly unavoidable hit until you see just what the game is trying to get you to do, and I feel like this game could have done a better job indicating just what it was players are doing wrong in these sections. Unfortunately, the need to attach both sides of the hook can be fiddly, and this game often seems to require the player to be doing things it doesn’t really make clear. Another big part of the game’s charm is its commitment to the 16-bit aesthetic. And when it’s playing well, this is a really fantastic experience. Steel Assault offers several difficulty levels, each an order of magnitude more difficult than the last. On the one hand, I love this game’s unique take on an Action-Platformer with a grappling hook, with this game’s zipline hook requiring a connection at both ends to be formed. When it comes to the gameplay… I have mixed feelings. I was only able to find a few examples to share, but they’re both good: Title Theme and Stage Music. The presentation here does a fantastic job recapturing the classic era of 8- and 16-bit games that the game is clearly trying to evoke, with nice 2D pixel art visuals and a really fantastic synthesized soundtrack that seems reminiscent of games like Mega Man X.

This is an old-school game that evokes memories of games like Bionic Commando with players fighting off hordes of military and technical enemies using a high-tech grappling hook, but it is very much its own thing.
